Corn Borer Control
Recipe if you are concerned about corn borer
One thing we want to point out is that when you have corn borer pressure you have a problem with the biology in the soil. It is not converting nitrate into ammonia nitrogen. The moth sees the color difference in the plant when your undigested nitrates are too high, then you attract disease and insects, which is a whole different topic.
Although we hardly ever have corn borer complaints from farmers there are a few here and there. Most farmers get borer mixed up with stalk rots. However, corn borer tend to cycle 1 year out of 7 that they are bad, then they don’t bother much the other 6 years.
Our advice is to place a trap in the corner of one of your fields once you get 10-15 moths in there after v8 to v10 this stage of the corn plant. Next, spray with your fungicide, either Steward from fmc or usana-xl from valient, 10 oz per acre, which lasts 20-30 days control. This should take care of the 2nd generation corn borer. We don’t worry about 3rd generation corn borer. Or, you spray at v8 to V10 and call it good.
